Question 1

Is two weeks' notice required by law in the US?

Accepted Answer

Generally no. Most US jobs are at-will. Missouri's Department of Labor, for example, says its state law has no requirement for notice and calls two weeks the generally accepted professional standard. An employment contract that requires notice is the exception, so check yours.

Question 2

If I give notice on a Friday, when is my last day?

Accepted Answer

With two weeks' notice starting the day after you give it, notice given on a Friday ends on the Friday two weeks later. That is 10 working days. Pick your resignation date above and the calculator shows the exact date and working-day count.

Question 3

Does two weeks mean 10 business days or 14 calendar days?

Accepted Answer

Most people mean 14 calendar days, which covers 10 working days when there are no holidays. If your employer counts business days, add any public holidays in the holidays field to see how many days you actually work.

Question 4

Can my employer let me go before the two weeks are up?

Accepted Answer

Under at-will employment an employer can usually end the job sooner, sometimes paying through the notice period and sometimes not. Policies vary by company and state, so ask HR how they handle notice before you resign if the last paycheck matters to you.
