    2. Perplexity AI

    What they do: The French AI lab building open-weight models that compete with the best proprietary ones. Their mixture-of-experts approach is pushing the efficiency frontier.

    Why work there: If you believe in open source AI, Mistral is the most credible company making it happen at scale. Based in Paris, which is a genuine lifestyle perk. European work-life balance with Silicon Valley-level impact.

    5. Cohere

    How to Get Hired at AI Startups

    Having talked to hiring managers at several of these companies, here's what actually moves the needle:

    Show, don't tell. Every AI startup gets thousands of applications from people who say they're "passionate about AI." What separates you is having actual projects. A fine-tuned model, a deployed application, a contribution to an open source ML project -- these speak louder than any resume bullet.

    Understand the product deeply. Before your interview, use the company's product extensively. If you're interviewing at Cursor, spend a week building a real project with it and have specific feedback. If it's Anthropic, push Claude to its limits and come with insights about where it excels and struggles.

    Nail the technical interviews. AI startup interviews are typically harder than big tech interviews because they need every hire to contribute immediately. Practice heavily with AI-powered interview tools and focus on system design, ML fundamentals, and coding under pressure.

    Salary Reality Check

    AI startup compensation is high, but it's important to understand the structure. Base salaries for senior engineers typically range from $180K-$250K. The rest comes from equity, which could be worth a fortune or worth nothing depending on the company's trajectory.

    My advice: optimize for the company and role that excites you most, not the highest comp number. The best AI startups are creating generational wealth for early employees. But you need to do your homework on the company's business model, growth trajectory, and funding situation before betting your career on equity upside.

    Wherever you end up applying, make sure your interview preparation is rock-solid. These companies are competitive to get into, and the candidates who practice deliberately -- especially with realistic simulations -- have a massive advantage over those who wing it.
