They search it. They type a skill or a title into LinkedIn Recruiter, filter by location and years of experience, and then skim the first 10 to 15 results. If your profile doesn’t surface in that search, none of the rest matters.

The BLS projects about 129,200 annual job openings for software developers through 2034, which sounds like plenty until you factor in how many engineers are chasing those same roles. The competition isn’t abstract. Getting your LinkedIn profile to actually appear in recruiter searches is a mechanical problem with mechanical solutions, most of which take under an hour.

Below I’ll go through what actually matters, what’s mostly cargo-culted advice, and one thing I still don’t know the right answer to.

Your headline isn’t your job title

This is where most engineers lose. They write “Software Engineer at Acme Corp” and leave it there. That’s fine if you’re not looking. If you are looking, it’s nearly invisible.

LinkedIn’s recruiter search ranks profiles partly on keyword density in the headline and summary. A headline that reads “Senior Backend Engineer | Go, PostgreSQL, Kubernetes | Distributed Systems | Open to Work” is hitting six or seven search terms that “Software Engineer at Acme Corp” isn’t.

The format that works: current title | two or three skill clusters | one achievement or signal. Keep it under 200 characters so it doesn’t truncate in search results. You don’t need to jam in every tool you’ve touched. Pick the ones recruiters at companies you want to work at are actually searching for. If you’re targeting fintech, that’s probably “payments,” “Kafka,” “event-driven.” If you’re targeting infra roles, it’s more like “platform engineering,” “SRE,” “Terraform.”

One thing I’d push back on: some career coaches say to include something like “Helping [X] achieve [Y]” in your headline, borrowed from the sales playbook. I think that reads as odd on an engineer’s profile. Recruiters searching for a Staff Engineer with distributed systems experience are not moved by mission statements.

Skills: add more than you think you need

LinkedIn lets you list up to 100 skills, and LinkedIn’s own data shows that profiles with skill endorsements receive 17 times more views from recruiters than profiles without them. That’s a real algorithmic effect, not just optics.

The practical implication: don’t be selective to the point of being sparse. Add the languages you’re proficient in, the frameworks you’ve shipped with, the cloud platforms you’ve run in production, and the methodologies you can speak to with specifics. If you can confidently answer a question about it in an interview, it belongs on your profile.

Get endorsements for your top three or four skills from colleagues who can vouch for them. You don’t need 50 endorsements. Even five or six from recognizable names moves your profile up in recruiter searches because LinkedIn’s algorithm weighs endorsed skills more heavily.

Taking LinkedIn’s built-in skill assessments is worth doing for a handful of skills. The badge is small but it does show up in search filters. A few recruiters specifically filter for “verified skills.” It probably takes 20 minutes per assessment. Do the ones where you’re confident you’ll pass on the first try.

The About section: three paragraphs, not a wall of text

Most LinkedIn About sections are either empty or 800 words of corporate autobiography. Neither helps you.

What actually works is short and structured. First paragraph: what you build and at what scale. Second paragraph: two or three specific things you’ve shipped, with numbers where you have them (“reduced p95 API latency from 800ms to 140ms,” “led the migration of a monolith to microservices serving 4 million daily active users”). Third paragraph: what you’re looking for and what kinds of problems you want to work on next.

That’s it. Three paragraphs. The goal is to give a recruiter enough to decide in 30 seconds whether to message you. Long paragraphs get skimmed. Specific numbers get noticed.

One caution: don’t invent metrics. Recruiters ask about these in screens, and “I wrote that in the About section but I don’t actually know the number” is an awkward start to a conversation.

Experience: treat it differently from your resume

Your resume is designed for ATS parsers and a recruiter spending 7 seconds on a skim. Your LinkedIn experience section has 2,000 characters per role and a different reader – someone who clicked through because they were already interested.

Use that space. Include the context that a resume bullet strips out: why the project mattered, what the technical tradeoffs were, what you learned. “Built an event-driven notification system handling 2M events/day, replacing a polling architecture that was causing database saturation” is more useful than “Developed notification microservice.”

Also add media to your top roles. A GitHub link, a conference talk, a technical blog post, a screenshot of a dashboard you built. These appear as visual cards under the role and they’re one of the few ways to differentiate profiles that otherwise look identical at the title level.

Keywords matter in experience descriptions too. If you want to show up for “distributed systems” searches, that phrase (or a close variant) should appear in your experience text, not just your headline. LinkedIn’s search indexes the full profile.

Photo and banner: yes, they matter

Profiles without photos are near-invisible in LinkedIn Recruiter. This isn’t perception. The platform’s algorithm visibly deprioritizes them in certain views. A professional headshot doesn’t mean a studio shoot. Good natural light, a plain background, and a photo where your face is actually visible works fine. Within the last two or three years is plenty.

The banner image is underused by engineers. Most leave it as the default blue gradient. A custom banner that shows your technical focus area – a screenshot of something you built, a simple graphic with your areas of expertise – makes your profile look more considered. Takes 10 minutes in Figma or Canva.

Open to Work settings: use the private one

If you set Open to Work to “All LinkedIn Members,” you get a green banner on your photo that’s visible to everyone, including your current employer. Recruiters can also see it, but so can your manager.

If you set it to “Recruiters Only,” it shows up in LinkedIn Recruiter searches as a signal that you’re open to opportunities, without the public banner. For most employed engineers who are casually looking, this is the better setting. It doesn’t make you invisible to companies either – recruiters who run talent searches without the Open to Work filter still find you. It just avoids the awkward conversation with your current boss.

What we notice in LastRoundAI mock interview sessions

Engineers who practice articulating their past projects out loud in mock interviews end up with noticeably sharper LinkedIn Experience descriptions. Explaining what you built and why to an AI interviewer forces you to identify the specific metrics and tradeoffs that make a bullet point stand out. The process of answering “walk me through a technically complex project” tends to surface the numbers candidates had forgotten to include on their profile. If your Experience section feels flat, running a few mock interviews is a surprisingly effective way to find the content for it.

Activity: you don’t need to post every week

The advice to “stay active on LinkedIn” gets misread as “post content constantly.” That’s not what moves the needle for engineers who aren’t building a personal brand.

What does help: leaving two or three substantive comments per week on posts in your technical area. Not “great post!” – actual technical reactions, disagreements, additions. LinkedIn’s algorithm shows your activity to your connections, which keeps your name circulating. It also makes your profile feel active to a recruiter who clicks through and checks what you’ve been doing.

If you do post, something specific and technical tends to do better than career advice or hot takes. A writeup of an interesting debugging session, a before/after on a performance optimization, a short opinion on a new tool you’ve used in production. Engineers who post things with actual code or numbers tend to get more meaningful engagement than those writing generically about “lessons learned.”

One thing I genuinely don’t know

How much does LinkedIn’s algorithm weight connection count vs. profile completeness vs. engagement history when ranking profiles in recruiter searches? I don’t have a clean answer. LinkedIn doesn’t publish those weights, and anyone who gives you a precise breakdown is probably guessing. What I do know is that keyword matching in headline, summary, and skills appears to be the highest-impact variable based on what engineers report after making profile changes. The rest – photos, activity, connections – probably matters at the margins.

The engineers I’ve seen get the most inbound recruiter interest aren’t necessarily the ones with the most polished profiles. They’re the ones with profiles that are specific, keyword-relevant, and backed by Experience descriptions with real numbers. The optimization work takes a few hours. Once it’s done, it doesn’t need much maintenance unless your focus area changes.

For the actual interview after the recruiter messages you, here’s a guide on how to pass coding interviews, and if you’re targeting senior roles, the system design interview guide is worth going through before your first screen.

Practice the Interview Before the Recruiter Calls Back

Once your LinkedIn profile starts generating inbound interest, use LastRoundAI to practice the technical and behavioral questions you’ll actually face in screens and onsites.

Try LastRound AI Free

Transform your LinkedIn profile to attract tech recruiters.
