One candidate built an entire REST API when we asked for a CLI tool. Impressive engineering, but it showed they didn&#8217;t read carefully.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-relaxed mb-6\">My process: read the requirements once to get the big picture. Read them again to identify specific deliverables. Read them a third time to catch any constraints or preferences they&#8217;ve mentioned &#8212; things like &#8220;we value clean commit history&#8221; or &#8220;bonus points for testing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-relaxed mb-6\">If anything is ambiguous, ask. Seriously. If it&#8217;s the default create-react-app README or completely empty, I&#8217;m already forming a negative impression before I&#8217;ve read a single line of code.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-lg leading-relaxed mb-6\">Your README should include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"mb-6 space-y-2\">\n<li class=\"text-lg\"><strong>Setup instructions<\/strong> that actually work. Clone, install, run &#8212; three commands max. I test this. If your app doesn&#8217;t start, it&#8217;s an automatic rejection at most companies I&#8217;ve worked at.<\/li>\n<li class=\"text-lg\"><strong>Design decisions<\/strong> and why you made them. &#8220;I chose SQLite over PostgreSQL because the assignment doesn&#8217;t require concurrent writes and it simplifies setup.&#8221; That&#8217;s the kind of thinking we want to see.<\/li>\n<li class=\"text-lg\"><strong>What you&#8217;d improve<\/strong> with more time. Be honest. If it took you 8 hours on a &#8220;4-hour assignment,&#8221; that&#8217;s fine. Proper error handling (not just try-catch everything and swallow errors). Separation of concerns. Don&#8217;t make one massive commit with everything.
