Small talk in professional settings gets dismissed as filler. It isn’t. It’s the signal your interviewers, colleagues, and future managers use to answer the question they can’t ask directly: is this person someone I can spend eight hours a day with?<\/p>\n
That doesn’t mean you need to become a different person. But if the chitchat before an interview or at a networking event locks you up, it’s worth treating it as a learnable skill rather than a personality trait you either have or don’t.<\/p>\n

“What are you working on right now that you’re actually excited about?”<\/strong> This is different from asking about the role or the company’s roadmap. It invites a genuine answer rather than a rehearsed one. People light up when they get to talk about something they care about.<\/li>\n
“How did you end up on this team specifically?”<\/strong> Not “how did you end up at the company” – that gets the PR version. Asking about the specific team often surfaces a more honest, more interesting answer.<\/li>\n
“I noticed on your LinkedIn you worked on [X] before this – did that end up being useful here?”<\/strong> Takes 30 seconds of prep and signals you did your homework without being sycophantic about it.<\/li>\n
Something contextual about the moment.<\/strong> The office layout. A talk title on the whiteboard. A mention of the commute only if it’s genuinely interesting (the Q train was delayed for 47 minutes counts; “traffic was bad” doesn’t).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
The consistent underlying pattern: ask something that centers on the other person and that they can’t answer with a single word. Don’t interrogate. Don’t fill silence with facts about yourself. Most people are decent at talking about themselves when given permission to do so.<\/p>\n

Comment on something visible in the interviewer’s background if it’s genuinely interesting – not generically interesting (“nice bookshelf!”), but specifically interesting (“I think I recognize that O’Reilly book, is that the distributed systems one?”). If there’s nothing worth commenting on, acknowledge the context simply: “Good timing on us both logging in – I always feel like Zoom has a five-second delay on muting that I never quite get right.” Self-deprecating about the technology is relatable and safe.<\/p>\n
Don’t try to match in-person energy levels. Remote small talk works at a slightly slower pace. Pausing is fine. Talking over each other is more disruptive on video than it is in person, so leaving a beat of silence before responding actually reads better than filling every gap.<\/p>\n

Ending a professional conversation – at a conference, at the end of the pre-interview warmup, at a networking event – is where people tend to trail off or get stuck. The cleanest exits are brief and give the other person something to follow up with.<\/p>\n
“It was genuinely good to hear about [X] – I’m going to look into that” is honest and closes the loop. “Let’s connect on LinkedIn” is fine, but it’s also what everyone says and often doesn’t happen. If you mean it, say “I’ll send you a request when I get home” and then do it. If you don’t mean it, skip it entirely.<\/p>\n
At a networking event, introducing someone you just met to another person in the room is the smoothest exit available. It’s generous to both parties and it signals you’re thinking about their interests, not just escaping.<\/p>\n
One Thing Worth Admitting<\/h2>\n
I don’t think there’s a reliable way to know in advance whether a given interviewer cares about small talk at all. Some don’t. Some senior engineers find it actively annoying and would prefer to get straight to the problem. Reading the room matters more than any generic script.<\/p>\n
That said, the asymmetry here is significant. If you skip small talk with someone who was looking for it, you’ve lost something hard to recover. If you attempt it with someone who didn’t care, you’ve lost maybe 90 seconds and nothing else. The expected value of making the attempt is positive in almost every scenario.<\/p>\n
